SUMMER RAMPAGE ’09

I’ve been playing various Cygnar lists for Summer Rampage ’09. All of the games have been fun, and hard fought. I admit that I have lost more than I have won, so I’m not helping out the Faction much. Hopefully that will change soon enough.

Here are some pictures from Summer Rampage ’09 being played at Whatever!! Sports Apparel and Games in DuBois, PA:

MAKING TERRAIN FOR SUMMER RAMPAGE 2009

I have several projects going at the same time on the Autopsy Table this week. I took a little time off, and I’m using my time wisely to get some terrain made for Summer Rampage. I’m also trying to finish off a few of my models that have been standing around glaring at me because they are only partially painted.

I made a bunch of small hills for the Local Gaming Store, Whatever!!, for use during friendly games and organized play. Although these don’t match the exact specs for Summer Rampage, we’re going to refer to the terrain on the maps as “small” or “big” so it doesn’t really matter.

A collection of small hills

A box of small hills ready to go to the LGS

I also finally got around to working on some buldings to donate to the LGS too. They are not done, but I took some pictures while they dry. I will finish them tomorrow.

A large building. The top comes off.

Small Building. The roof comes off, too.

Both of the buildings above cost about $0.99 at Michaels Craft Store. They are paper mache and intended for use as a storage device so the roofs come off. When we store these at the LGS we can put the small bits of terrain into them so that the small stuff doesn’t get lost. Nice place to keep the paper templates and such, you know.

The Church.

The Church.

The Church

The Church is ceramic, one of those knock off brand Christmas village buildings. I bought it right after Christmas at Goodwill for $0.45 and figured after I repainted it I would donate it to the LGS. Since its ceramic I figure it will end up broken sooner or later … and then I can use it as a Ruined Church with some fast repainting.

And how could I sit at the Autopsy Table without doing some model painting?!

I have been “working” on a Journeyman Warcaster, 2 Centurions, and a Trencher Gun Crew for quite awhile now. I slapped some more paint on them, but they aren’t ready to be called “done” quite yet as you can see.

I like the look of the Trencher Gunner. I added some sandbag bits from Games Workshop. I like that there’s a trench knife sticking out of the sandbag.

You can see the sandbags a little better here.

And lastly, I have to be a little iconoclastic and show you the terrain piece I am calling “Our Lady of Peace.” I bought this at Goodwill for $0.25 and figure it’s a good piece to go along with the Church. Or maybe this is an ancient Elven goddess idol that has been shroaded in mystery until recently when the Angry Elves arrived to lay waste to the Iron Kingdoms. Who knows?

So that’s what I’ve been working on today. It’s about time to hang things up and go to bed. I posted earlier in the week that I needed to clean up the Autopsy Table. That’s not happening any time soon. But I’m hoping that a cluttered and messy hobby table is the sign of a happy gamer.

Messy Desk = Happy Gamer?

If you’re reading this from GENCON INDY … why?! Go have some fun already. And ninja me a pre-order of MKII with that special pre-release mercenary model, huh? I’ll pay yah back, I’ll good for it.

Keep rollin’ sixes.

READY TO RAMPAGE: BUYING TERRAIN

An Ironclad stalks the streets.

So you want to play SUMMER RAMPAGE?

AWESOME!

But maybe you’re busy and don’t have time to make the terrain for the event. Maybe your store doesn’t have a stock of cool terrain. And, perhaps you are not that inclined to making your own terrain … oh noes!

BUMMER.

Have no fear, true believer! If you have the cash, and the time … here are some suggestions on pre-made terrain you can purchase on the internet or special order from your favorite Local Gaming Shop. (LGS)

Gun Mages dart through the broken landscape.

  • Toy Soldiers Depot – Check out the American Civil War buildings, and the “battlefield accessories” section.

SKUNKED BY A MONK

I played a multiplayer game Wednesday night at WHATEVER!! against Larry and Scott. I was getting in another game to practice for the upcoming SUMMER RAMPAGE event.

Larry was using Servath Reznik.

Scott had Hoarluk Doomshaper.

I was using Kaya the Wildborne.

Chuck Norris?

Chuck Norris?

Long story short, Larry whipped on both of us.

I used every Circle Orboros Warbeast that I currently own. So although the following list isn’t the one that the “Know It Alls” would recommend on the forums, this is what I used … (and I had fun using it too!)

Faction: Circle Orboros
Points: 493
Model Count: 10
Victory Points: 20

Kaya the Wildborne
Argus
Argus
Gorax    (“Lorax the Gorax”)
Warpwolf
Warpwolf
Alten Ashley, Monster Hunter
Shifting Stones    [3]

I ended up chasing that darn monk around so much that I lost focus and ended up getting Kaya assassinated.

I tied up one of the two Reckoners with my two Argus. They ended up dying but not before nearly destroying the ‘jack. (They knocked out the Movement quickly which helped.)

Alten got into position to shoot Dire Trolls from across the river … but ended up only getting to shoot Champions instead. Not very effective but Scott kept the Dire Trolls on the far side of the table from Alten, putting a bridge between them.

However, the Warpwolves and Gorax got skunked by the monk. One of the warbeasts would engage the monk, miss due to crappy dice rolls and the monk’s high defense, and then the monk would move away to engage a different warbeast. Then the monk would punch and kick the snot out of that warbeast. This went on and on until the monk managed to get close enough to attack Kaya. I was able to transfer damage a few times, but the monk always managed to slip away unscathed and start smacking something else down. In the end, Reznik popped his feat to remove Fury from Kaya, and that monk kicked her into submission.

Menoth won. Yeah, the Old Witch must have been talking with that frickin’ monk, dude.

I vowed revenge and then went home to read up on Impervious Wall and the Allegiant of the Order of the Fist.

However, I got to call “Moral Victory” today because I discovered that Larry was using Shifting Winds Stance incorrectly. He wasn’t giving up his action to get the Defense boost and movement when I missed. So that makes a big difference in how things played out. He can get the defense boost and move if missed OR get to attack … not both like he was doing. Larry was misreading the card, and didn’t realize he was using it improperly. No harm no foul. We’ve got it figured out now.

But … I call REMATCH!

And maybe this time I’ll have a better chance at tearing that monk limb from limb.

See you next time.

Keep rollin’ sixes.

RAMPAGE PRACTICE

007

Summer Rampage starts soon. Megan and I decided that we’d play a practice game to get ready for the League. Besides, I won all those Conflix buildings on Ebay and wanted to put them to good use. I also wanted to use the pre-painted Pegasus Hobbies Craters that I bought recently. So while I started pulling out the miniatures from their foamy homes, Megan got busy setting up the table.

I decided that he would play HORDES.

Faction: Circle Orboros
Points: 329
Model Count: 5

Victory Points: 14

Kaya the Wildborne
Argus
Argus

Warpwolf

And Megan got to play Cygnar, with a slight edge of an extra few points.

Faction: Cygnar
Points: 440
Model Count: 5
Victory Points: 14

Lieutenant Allister Caine
> Charger
> Hunter (# 707)
> Hunter (# 812)
> Defender

Caine's Battlegroup

Caine's Battlegroup

So we rolled the dice and Megan won. Ladies first. She chose to be the First Player. She set up first and got to move first.

Caine gave focus to the Hunters (707 and 812) and kept enough for Flash. She brought the Hunters up to the front to do some shooting. The Hunter 707 blasted and a missed its target ; but managed to determine the range needed to hit the Warpwolf. Hunter 812 popped off a round, tearing fur and flesh on the Warpwolf. The Defender stomped into position between the Hunters and fired off a shot, missing its mark. The Charger ran to the left of the other ‘jacks, positioning himself between two buildings. Caine  followed the Charger, taking up a hiding spot behind the hayloft to the left. Then arcane runes flared and he was gone, reappearing behind the Blacksmith shop at the far left edge of the table. He leaned against the building with a wry smile, peeking out at the battlefield.

Cygnar takes first turn

The Hunters up front and aggressive

It was obvious that Caine was out of reach. Megan had made sure that Caine was out of the way. What a surprise! If I knew my wife’s tactics, Caine would be Flashing up to the roof of the hayloft next, and popping his feat. I had to make this turn count because I might be losing a few Argus next turn. I scanned the board, and decided quickly that those Hunters were too close for comfort. Time to hunt the Hunters.

I have to admit that this turn didn’t go too well. I forgot to make sure I used Stealth on Kaya. The first Argus moved forward and Slammed into Hunter 812, but failed the Power Attack’s roll.  Kaya cast Spirit door, and appeared next to Hunter 707 and the first Argus. She smacked the Hunter twice Splinter. The first hit scored a Critical Knockdown, and the second one took out the Hunter’s Movement. Good stuff. The Warpwolf, and other two Argus moved into position behind, hoping that Kaya would surived the inevitable onslaught of shooting from Caine next turn. I did manage to remember to save one Fury to transfer damage. (I almost got carried away laying the beatdown on that Hunter!)

Long story short, the turn ended looking like this:

turn2

The Hunters hunted

Turn two went very well for Cygnar. Caine walked forward, and started blasting everything in sight. He not only fired his pistols four times, but also popped his feat before Flashing back into a hiding spot behind the Blacksmith’s shop again. Caine’s shooting left all the Warbeasts with moderate damage. Their spirals were looking too colorful for my liking. Kaya had taken 8 points of damage, leaving her with 8 remaining damage boxes. Not cool. And that was just the beginning. The Defender moved again, coming closer. It blasted at one of the Argus but missed. Hunter 707 hacked at Kaya with its axe, missing. Hunter 812 slashed at the Argus that tried to Slam it, biting into flesh and sending blood spattering on the cobblestones. The Charger moved into a better firing position and blasted the Warpwold once, scoring minor damage. All in all, the Warbeasts were hurt badly, and Kaya was wounded.

Turn two for Circle was good enough. One of the Argus moved forward to engage the Defender. (No shooting for you!) Kaya sent one of the Argus to the far left corner of the Hayloft. Then she hit Hunter 707, knocking out its Cortex. The engaged Argus chomped on Hunter 707 twice, knocking out its Third system, the Left Arm. The Warpwolf charged Hunter 812, hitting with both Claws and Throat Ripper. In the end, Hunter 812 was no more.

017

Rawr!

Turn 2 - Circle Orboros revenge!

Turn 3 - Circle Orboros revenge!

Turn three for Cygnar was unlucky! The Defender tried to smash the Argus with its Hammer and missed. Caine stepped up, shot four times at Kaya, and missed three times. The successful hit only iflicted 2 damage. Kaya was down to six damage boxes now. Caine flashed away again, back behind the Blacksmith’s shop. The Charger moved up and shot at the Warpwolf, missing. bad dice rolls were the norm this turn. Nedless to say, Megan was not too happy.

Circle, on the other hand, has a decent third turn. Threshold checks were magical. Everything was fine despite some fury sticking around. The Argus engaging Hunter 707 chomped twice again, turning the ‘jack into a wreck. The one battling the Defender took two bites, inflicting a few boxes of damge to the Defender. The Argus near Kaya ran up to the corner of the Blacksmith shop, stopping on the opposite side of the building from Caine. Kaya finally cast Cloak of Mists on herself, and Rager on the Warpwolf. She saved two Fury for herself because Caine was sure to try his Hit-N-Run tactic again. The Warpwolf must have had a smile on its face as it moved forward, and Power Attacked the Charger. A few dice rolled later, the Charger was Thrown (Double Handed) into the Blacksmith’s shop. The resulting damage knocked out its Movement and Cortex. Nice.

Turn Four was ineffective for Cygnar again. Both Hunters were out of the game. The charger stood up, and fired a shot at the Warpwolf. It missed, misreably, and stoof there to await its fate. Caine emerged from the behind the Blacksmith’s shop again, shooting twice at the Argus that was hunting him. Two shots reduced it to two remianing damage boxes. Flashing away again, the Cygnar gunfighter took up his spot behind the building and hoped for the best.

Caine goes down for the count.

This picture is posed. The end of the game was so exciting that neither of us took a picture!

Turn Four sealed the deal. The Argus came around the corner, and chewed on Caine. Then with the help of Spirit Door, Kaya appeared behind Caine. She hit him once with Splinter, scoring three sixes. Critical Knockdown sealed Caine’s fate. She hit him again, and then popped her feat. Using the extra Fury, Kaya proceeded to beat Caine into submission. Bad, boy. Bad! The Warpwolf never even had a chance to get his claws on the Gunmage.

So in this practice session of Summer Rampage: Circle Orboros wins!

023c

(Yes, I have No Quarter #25. But both of us forgot to use finishing moves … which sucked. Oh well, next time.)

I’m looking forward to playing some Summer Rampage in DuBois this year. Should be fun!
