Bowels of the Earth tavern
Bowels of the Earth tavern

The Company settled into The Bowels of the Earth tavern in Waterdeep and began to investigate the dark, mysterious building. It was not long before they came to the agreement that something Evil resided in the topmost level of the tavern. They prepared themselves, and then set out to confront whatever lay waiting for them in the darkness.

Commentary written by Volo in his Guide to Waterdeep

Investigating the room they found a vampire’s nest. The entire place had been desecrated, and stank of Evil. Two vampire spawn were hanging from the ceiling. One appeared to be a beautiful young man and the other was ugly, disfigured and twisted. Our heroes saw that the vampires had been feeding for some time. Several bodies in various states of decay lay discarded throughout the room.

The Company fought bravely, putting down the two undead creatures quickly. Each vampire tried to escape by turning into mist, but Brûne used his magic to call down Moonbeam to turn the creatures to dust. As each one was destroyed, the Company heard a scream of despair and rage from somewhere beyond the room.

As the Company slayed the last vampire spawn, they heard a cry of rage and stomping in the hallway outside. Shouting in anger, a female Vampire burst into the room. She had sensed the demise of her spawn, and rushed in to extract revenge. She was dressed in dark purple armor marked with the holy symbol of Vecna at its center. The combat was fast and furious, but in the end our heroes prevailed.

As the Vampire crumbled into dust, she cried out: “My lord Vecna, why have you forsaken me!?”

Over the next few hours, the Company shut down the tavern and had a unit of soldiers from Neverwinter search the entire place. Meanwhile, Brûne and Alric started the prcoess to unravel the desecration of the vampire nest. During this time, the owner, a gentle giant named Ongamar Talthloon, complained that this was bad for business. When Vrae’ree explained that they had uncovered a nest of vampires within the tavern, Ongamar changed his tune and was willing to cooperate, especially when he realized that Vrea’ree and the others were working as agents of the Lord’s Alliance and the Lords of Waterdeep.

The Company also met with Moriath, master thief for the Shadow Thief Guild. Moriath explained that the tavern is a safehouse for the Guild. The Guild operates legally due to an arrangement with the Athkatla  Council of Six and the Lords of Waterdeep. Moriath thanked the Company for their efforts in wiping out the Vampires. Moriath agreed to aid them by offering the help of 25 Guild Thieves to help in defending and searching the tavern.

Once the tavern was secure, our heroes decided it was time to take a rest in preparation for whatever might happen when the moon rose full in the sky.

A few hours later, our heroes awoke to the sounds of battle. Rushing downstairs, they looked into the street to see Waterdeep City Guard and Neverwinter Soldiers fighting side-by-side with Shadow Thieves against black-clad Dragon Cultists. In the middle of the conflict strode a powerful looking man. With each swing, he dropped another defender of Waterdeep. The man strode forward, putting boot to the door of the tavern. Stepping through the door, he sneered at our heroes. “I am Cyric,” he growled. “And I believe you have MY SWORD…”
