ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II: “BUNKER RAID”

The story so far in this campaign is recorded here. Check it out.

The player characters were contacted by Nick Fury to test a secret super-weapon. During the test, time-travelling Nazi commandos try to steal the weapon and take it to 1943, to add to the German war effort. The heroes must discover who this men are, and then they must go to the World War Two, to stop the Red Skull from using other futuristic weapons and change history!

THE RAID

In this scenario, the Allied forces are raiding The Bunker. The scenario is loosely based on Chapter 13 of the Marvel Super Heroes adventure “All This and World War II” from TSR in 1989 by Ray Winninger. According to Chapter 13, Captain America plans out the bunker raid in East Prussia. He gives orders for the small assault team to fly over the Bunker and parachute in under cover of darkness. They will hit the Bunker to recon it, then slip out. They will then meet a British submarine to escape the Bunker.

THE RULES

The Allied forces have Captain America and Bucky.   They get in, check things out, and get out. The models are deployed on one side of the board, and must escape from the other. This battle takes place within the Bunker, so players are encouraged to use some kind of interior maze to navigate and fight in close quarters. We used Dwarven Forge to provide the interior of the Bunker.

The Axis forces have Zombies that have been turned loose in the first level of the Bunker to deal with Captain America. Yes, the Red Skull is watching from his control room assuming that the Star Spangled Man will not survive this intrusion to Hitler’s Lair. The Axis player will have 6 Zombies which are deployed near the Allie’s exit point. For every turn that the Allies remain in the Bunker, 6 more Zombies will be deployed to the table. The hallways will get crowded fast.

What The? miniatures produced the Captain America and Bucky miniatures. They are sold from time to time on Ebay as a set.

ENDING THE GAME

The Allies will win if Captain America and Bucky are able to navigate the maze of the Bunker and escape through the exit on the opposite side of the board. It will be assumed that they were able to gather enough information to allow for a full fledged attack on the Bunker. Both heroes must escape alive, or the Allies lose. Bucky can’t die on this one, folks.

The Axis will win if the zombies manage to eat Captain America and Bucky. Yum!

THE STORY

My wife and I played through the scenario in 5 turns. That means that I ended up being able to use a total of 30 zombies during the game. However, despite my best efforts to stop the two heroes, I was unable to do so. Luckily, neither of them had Grenades, so the battle was rough for Megan to get the two through the Bunker maze. In the end, the Allies were successful.

Bucky’s ability to gun down zombies with his SMG in close quarters while Cap tosses his shield or Leaps to attack from the opposite direction works nicely against the zombies. Also, the narrow corridors stop the zombies from using their Strength In Numbers ability to the max.

When I get a chance, I will upload some of the pictures and include a short Battle Reort from the game.

Try this scenario, it’s a lot of fun.

ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II: “THE STORY SO FAR”

The player characters were contacted by Nick Fury to test a secret super-weapon. During the test, time-travelling Nazi commandos try to steal the weapon and take it to 1943, to add to the German war effort. The heroes must discover who this men are, and then they must go to the World War Two, to stop the Red Skull from using other futuristic weapons and change history!

Here’s the story so far …  ALLIES: 2   AXIS: 1

Session #1: The Summons  The Allied Forces were summoned by S.H.I.E.L.D. to reach the lab and capture Klaus before he can escape with the aid of Red Skull and some other villains.

Session #2: Rescue the Doctor: The Allied Forces were sent to intercept Baron Zemo. The Allies discovered that Zemo had captured Doctor Who and the TARDIS, using Nazi Super Science to create two “time ships” based on the designs of the TARDIS. The Allied forces were successful in recovering The Doctor but Zemo escaped with the Time Ships. In this session, the time traveling Spider-Man is ultimately killed by a zombie.

Session #3: Trial by Combat:  The Allied Forces were sent to stop the Red Skull from sending Elite Nazi Forces into the future using the time ships. The Axis forces pulled out a win on this one, and the Red Skull managed to send his men into the time stream searching for “super weapons” to help Hitler win the war. According to The Doctor, the Nazi forces were sent to the years 1989 and 2146.

Session #4: Let’s Kill Hitler: A counter operation is conceived by The Doctor while working directly with MI-13. The plan is to form a massive group of Super Soldiers, and raid Hitler’s bunker. Captain America gathered a crack Suicide Squad made up of Easy Company and The Howling Commandos. Both are given orders to begin the assault on Hitler’s Bunker.

ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II: “TRIAL BY COMBAT”

As you already know, we are using the TSR MARVEL SUPERHEROS RPG adventure “All This and World War II” as a guideline to play through a campaign of Grindhouse Games‘s 1949: Secrets of the Third Reich. We have played through two sessions, and this is the third.

So far, the heroes have been recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D to help stop a time travel snafu where Hitler has commanded the Red Skull to use time machines to seek out and capture “super weapons” to alter history in the favor of the German army.

And now, to the session recap:

Session #3: Trial by Combat:  The Allied Forces were sent to stop the Red Skull from sending Elite Nazi Forces into the future using the time ships. The Axis forces pulled out a win on this one, and the Red Skull managed to send his men into the time stream searching for “super weapons” to help Hitler win the war. According to The Doctor, the Nazi forces were sent to the years 1989 and 2146.

During this session, the Allied player (Megan) chose to use the following forces:

  • Captain America and Bucky  (RP=10)
  • Wild Bill Donovan (RP=4)
  • AI US Armored Infantry Squad (RP=6)
  • M-100 “Comanche” Light Mech x3 (RP=6)

During the battle, The Red Skull managed to use his clones to avoid assassination and capture by the Allied Forces. Although the Armored Infantry Squad suffered heavy losses, the Allies were unable to stop the Axis forces from sending Elite Nazi Commandos into the future.

The Red Skull managed to escape, and secured a sound victory for the Axis forces.

ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II: “LET’S KILL HITLER”

The player characters are contacted by Nick Fury to test a secret super-weapon. During the test, time-travelling Nazi commandos try to steal the weapon and take it to 1943, to add to the German war effort. The heroes must discover who this men are, and then they must go to the World War Two, to stop the Red Skull from using other futuristic weapons and change history!

It’s 1949, and the Germans have a Doomsday Device hidden in The Bunker located deep inside the tunnels of The Rock of Gibraltar.

Adolf Hitler isn’t dead.

He’s safe and sound  in The Bunker protected by Super Soldiers, Mutants, and Zombies. He bides his time with the assistance of the Von X family, awaiting the chance to end the war using his Doomsday Device, the only remaining Atomic Weapon.

So when Sgt. Rock gets orders from the Skipper to meet up with a bunch of fancy pants Super Heroes and some medic named The Doctor, he gives the order to Easy Company:

“Let’s kill Hitler!”

“Let’s Kill Hitler!”

***

It is the year of our Lord, 1949 and the world is in flames. The human race screams in agony as the Second World War rages unchecked around the planet. Nations die and hundreds of millions perish as the thin veneer of civilization is utterly consumed in a global orgy of savagery and rage.

Nazi Super Science has changed the course of the war.

MI-13 is the United Kingdom’s answer to enemy super science, occult activity, and specifically , the German Special Weapons Division (SWD). This intelligence agency has a powerful military arm. In addition to specialized field agents, MI-13 deploys commando kill teams that bring with them the knowledge and equipment to get the job done on a mission by mission basis.

MI-13  Commandos are elite special forces who’s ranks are filled with the most decorated and fearless former LRDG and SAS as well as highly trained “specialists” with unique powers.

Those in the know call the MI-13 by their nickname: “The Bad Luck Boys.” They are Englands monster hunters. Lead by the unkillable John Lazarus, the Bad Luck Boys get the mission done without complaint.

They have seen it all. They have hunted vampires, launched impossible raids on fortified enemy laboratories, and on occasion even driven the Minions of Hell back through its burning gates. MI-13 elements provide intelligence and tactical support to US Lucky Seventh forces at Gibraltar.

MI-13 has made contact with the mysterious gentleman known only as The Doctor.

***

And apparently The Doctor has a plan to end this war … by killing Adolf Hitler.
“The Mission is difficult, but you’re used to that right, Sarge? Infiltrate The Bunker located in your dossier and eliminate all threats encountered. Easy Company is going to be linking up with some kind of highly respected medic from MI-13 for this one.”
“Easy doesn’t need another Medic,” commented Rock flatly.  “You know that, Steve.”
“Skipper says that this guy is the reason we get the crack at Adolf this time. No choice. He’s coming with you.”
Rock scowled. “What’s his name?”
“The Doctor.”
“Wonderful.” Rock shook his head slightly.
“Look sharp, Easy!” Sgt Frank Rock turned and looked at his men. “Let’s kill Hitler!”
Steve Rogers, known to some at Captain America, turned and walked away with a determined smile.

In the world of Secrets of the Third Reich, In the last days of the Second World War, history takes a sudden unexpected twist. In July 1945, the German Army reveals that it wields Atomic Power and detonates these weapons on American, European, and Russia soil. The effects are devastating. This added with the introduction of Hugo Von X’s V-gas which turns humans into flesh-eating zombies, the Second World War continues. The Allied try to maintain a “can do” attitude, but but many are coming to the realization that the war may not be winnable.
“I know not with what weapons this World War will be fought, but World War III will be fought with sticks and stones.” – Albert Einstein

ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR TWO: “RESCUE THE DOCTOR”

Session #2: Rescue the Doctor: The Allied Forces are sent to intercept Baron Zemo. The Allies discovered that Zemo had captured Doctor Who and the TARDIS, using Nazi Super Science to create two “time ships” based on the designs of the TARDIS. The Allied forces were successful in recovering The Doctor but Zemo escaped with the Time Ships.

One of the many Zombies made by West Wind which was included in the BRAINWURST starter set.

Secrets of the Third Reich has an interesting mechanic called Turn Initiative. This is determined each turn by players rolling 1d6 and adding the Cool rating of the highest ranking officer still in play (not Down or Disorganized.)

This mechanic became very important during this session because the person with the highest Turn Initiative decides which player does first to resolve each phase of the turn. For example, during the Maintenance Phase their is an advantage of forcing your opponent to resolve effects first, because Smoke and Burning goes away and Down results are determined showing which models survive and which ones are out of the game.

The Turn Structure for Secrets of the Third Reich is as follows:

  1. Turn Initiative
  2. Maintanance
  3. Command
  4. Action
  5. Close Combat

Anyway, in this game of ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II, the Allies were up against the Von X family and Baron Zemo, along with several Axis troopers, including Zombies.

The Allies included:

  • The Time Travellers:  Iron Man, Spider Man, Moon Knight, and Frank Castle. (Sentinels) RP= 32 RP  (pg 110)
  • The US A1 Armored Infantry Platoon  RP= 6  (page 111)
  • Chameleon Snipers Team  RP= 6  (page 113)
  • British Rifle Platoon Comman Section  RP=4 (page 123)
  • TOTAL RP= 48

In this session, the Axis forces won.  Major events in the game included Spider Man meeting his doom thanks to the well placed sniper shooting of Mech Grenadier Sniper team, and the recuse of Doctor Who and his TARDIS. Although the Allied forces will no longer be able to use Spider Man as a valid character in future session, they now have access to The Doctor as a member of MI-13 British Special Forces and the Bad Luck Boys.

During this game, Spider Man was hit by a German Sniper Team. He remained Down for two turns, and afterwards was declared a Goner after being chewed on by a Zombie.

ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II

All This and World War II is a role-playing game adventure published by TSR, Inc. for the original Marvel Super Heroes role-playing game. It was the first of a three-part module where the player characters are intended to time-travel using an alien time machine. The name of the book was taken from the Beatles’ musical documentary All This and World War II.

Using the rules from Secrets of the Third Reich, we have started playing through this module using the built in Marvel Superhero rules for miniatures in the module. (Although their idea of miniatures were cardboard squares on plastic bases.) So far, the Allies are ahead 1-0 against the Axis powers.

In the next game of “All This and World War II”, the heroes will be defending against an attacking force of Nazi Infantry led by the Red Skull.

The Red Skull, Johann Schmidt, was a former Nazi general officer and confidant of Adolf Hitler. He has been closely affiliated with HYDRA and is an enemy of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers, and the interests of the United States and the free world in general. He has been seemingly killed in the past, only to return time and time again to plague the world with schemes of world domination and genocide.

The Axis Powers may have lost the last time, but we’ll see if they can tie it up in our next game.

Until next time, keep Rollin’ Sixes.

MARC SPECTOR: THE MOON KNIGHT

Moon Knight

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Marc Spector is an American rabbi’s wayward son. As an adult, Spector spends time training to be a heavyweight boxer, a U.S. Marine, and a mercenary. He becomes a skilled combatant and befriends the French pilot Jean-Paul DuChamp, whom he calls “Frenchie.” While the pair work for the African mercenary Raoul Bushman in Egypt, the group stumbles upon an archaeological dig whose crew includes Dr. Peter Alraune and his daughter Marlene. The dig had uncovered an ancient temple where artifacts included a statue of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Intent on looting the dig, Bushman kills Dr. Alraune. In response to Alraune’s murder, Spector challenges Bushman to personal combat but is beaten nearly to death and left to die in the sub-zero temperatures of the desert night.

Roaming Egyptians who worship the ancient Egyptian gods find Spector and carry him to their temple. Helpless before the statue of Khonshu, Spector’s heart stops. Khonshu appears to him in a vision, offering Spector a second chance at life if he becomes the god’s avatar on Earth. Spector awakens, wraps himself with the silver shroud that covers Khonshu’s statue, and again confronts Bushman. He defeats Bushman and returns to America with Marlene Alraune, Frenchie, and the statue of Khonshu. Deciding to become a crime-fighter, Spector creates a silver cloaked costume, based on the silver shroud, and becomes the Moon Knight.

Heroclix Moon Knight

And because we all know that Moon Knight took his turn smashing Nazi soldiers into the dirt alongside The Invaders while he served with the West Coast Avengers during ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II, it’s time to consider what Moon Knight might look like using the rules for Secrets of the Third Reich. Moon Knight costs 8 RP follows all of the rules of a Sentinel of Freedom as detailed on page 110 of the Secrets of the Third Reich book. In addition, Moon Knight has the following special abilities:

  • Power Boost: Under the conditions of a full moon, Moon Knight gains Hard To Kill detailed on page 49 of the Secrets of the Third Reich handbook. (Perfect for a scenario involving hunting Werewolves!)

ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II: “THE SUMMONS”

Ever since The Avengers movie was announced, my mind has turned back to comic books a bit. I used to collect and read comics when I was in high school, but my interest fell off when I started to see storylines repeating and the price of the books started going up. And frankly at the time, they were screwing up all my favorite comics: Steve Rogers was The Captain, Robin had gotten blown up, and Storm was a little girl. So, I ditched comics for awhile.

But when Captain America came out, my thoughts returned to the Weird War tales of Captain America bashing in the heads of Nazi goons. At about this same time, I heard about two games called AE: WW II and Secrets of the Third Reich. Both games involved a “shadow war” alternate history of World War 2 including Nazi Super Science, Hitler’s Occult Madness, Zombies, and Superheroes. Although AE: WW II looked like a cool game, Secrets of the Third Reich won because I was able to pick up the rulebook and Brainwurst set both for 50% off retail price with free shipping.

So that puts us right here. Megan and I are going to play through the Marvel Superhero story called ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II. I’ve made a few changes to the plot at the beginning, but it’ll be fine. It’ll take awhile to play through as a campaign, but that’s okay. We have nothing but time, right?

We’re using the rules for Secrets of the Third Reich for the game, although several of the miniatures are from the Marvel Heroscape or Heroclix sets. Your could very easily play this scenario with either game, if you wish.

SESSION #1: The Summons

Nick Fury calls the heroes to SHIELD HQ to give them the big story. After Fury introduces himself and struts around a lot, he explains that he needs to find and capture a former SHIELD agent named Klaus Kruptmann who is a recent traitor. The goal of the game was to reach the lab and capture Klaus before he can escape with the aid of Red Skull and some other villians.

Megan played Captain America very aggressively. He was cornered by Venom and Doctor Doom along with a few Axis Zombies. Cap managed to take down the Zombies and wounded Venom, but Doctor Doom put Captain America down for the count. A medical flight was called in for the First Avenger, keeping him alive for future games in the campaign.

With Captain America down and wounded, the heroes were left with Silver Surfer and Hulk. Klaus was still on the board, and the day was not lost yet.

The Zombies were a challenge for all of the Heroes despite their amazing Sentinel rules. However, led by the Red Skull as their Controller … it made them a force to be reckoned with for sure.

Hulk smashed. And smashed. And smashed. He killed a bunch of Zombies. However, the Red Skull was renlentless in his pursuit of the green skinned monster. Silver Surfer had to swoop in and rescue Hulk from a rampaging horde of twenty five zombies lest the Hulk be food for the Axis forces. Both Silver Surfer and Hulk left the board seeking medical attention.

Spider Man turned out to be the MVP of the game. He not only took out the most Zombies but also managed to capture Klaus with his web spinner.

With Klaus captured. the heroes return to SHIELD HQ to see what Nick Fury has up his sleeve for them next. For Session #1 of ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR TOO, the Allied forces score a win. The Axis forces lose.

Thanks for reading, and until next time … keep rollin’ sixes!
