Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
— Psalm 119:114
The patrons are tutelary deities, a spirit who is a guardian, saint, or protector of a particular place, geographic feature, person, lineage, nation, culture, or occupation. The etymology of “tutelary” expresses the concept of safety, and thus of guardianship. The unlearned might called these spirits “gods” but they are closer to saints.
